Design with a Global Identity: How the Starbucks Reserve Store in Milan Was Built

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery located in Milan’s Piazza Cordusio is much more than a coffee shop. It is an impeccable example of how architectural design can achieve a balance between local history and a global brand experience. From the restoration of the building to the choice of materials and the spatial layout, this project represents a true lesson in design with a global identity.

A building with heritage value

The property where this store operates today was originally a post office built in 1901, featuring impressive neoclassical architecture. When Starbucks opened its first store in Italy—a country historically skeptical of international coffee culture—it understood the need for a respectful approach, adapting the place without losing its historical essence.

The result was an intervention that did not alter the building’s structure but instead revitalized it, exposing original elements such as marble floors, ornate high ceilings, and majestic columns while integrating modern technologies, functional furnishings, and sensory pathways.

Interior design conceived as an experience

One of the project’s greatest achievements was the interior design. The space is conceived as a visual and emotional journey. Visitors do not simply enter a café—they enter a narrative universe where each area is carefully illuminated, connected through warm tones, rich textures, and a multisensory experience.

Noble materials such as copper, dark wood, and natural stone were used, contrasted with contemporary touches in the furniture and lighting. This contrast is what allows the space to convey a sense of sophistication without losing approachability.

Neuroarchitecture applied to retail

This space is also an example of neuroarchitecture applied to commerce. Design decisions were made considering how color, light, and layout influence user perception. The experience is carefully calibrated to generate comfort, extended stay, and memorability. Areas are arranged to allow pauses, conversation, and fluid movement, appealing to the well-being of every visitor.

Global design with local roots

Although it is a global brand, Starbucks understood that it needed to integrate into the Milanese context without imposing a uniform aesthetic. The project is a benchmark in contextual design—one that respects the environment and enriches the city. Far from replicating a model, the Milan store becomes a meeting point between cultures, architecture, design, and responsible consumption.

Conclusion

The Starbucks Reserve in Milan demonstrates that a commercial space can be much more than a point of sale. It can become a memorable place where architecture engages in dialogue with the brand, the user, and the city. At INGAR Construcciones, we believe in this type of design: one that connects with history, understands people, and builds lasting experiences. Every project we take on seeks to be functional, beautiful, and emotionally meaningful. Because designing with purpose is building with vision.
